Miniature version of an agricultural machine used to mechanically winnow grain. As the grain passes over a fine mesh, airflow separates it from small impurities and pieces of straw. Originally brought to Europe from China by Dutch travelers, this type of machine became known throughout the French countryside in the mid-19th century.
